Should Wide Hardwood Planks Be Glued ?

Bona glue assist on engineered hardwood flooring

This is the question we get asked weekly at Rustic Woods Flooring. The simple answer to the question is YES. Any engineered hardwood flooring that's greater then 6"wide, we highly recommend laying a bead of glue in a "S" pattern on the back of each board. Doing this allows the boards to be securely fastened to the subfloor every 4"-6" which is the recommended intervals by the majority of manufacturers. Along with staying within the manufacturer's recommendations, the installation will be

superior to those that skip this important step. When an engineered floor is glued and nailed properly, you can expect your floor to feel stronger, and have 75% less squeaks and crackling then a floor that was fastened with cleats alone. The cost to add "glue assist" will typically run you 0.75 cents to $1.00 more then your standard installation pricing. At Rustic Woods Flooring we love to use the Bona adhesive. It tends to be the smoothest on the market when it comes to applying the adhesive to the back of the boards. It also allows an easy clean up if you were to get some on the finished side of your new hardwood floor.

If you're looking at purchasing an engineered hardwood 6" or larger confirm with your installation company that they will be using adhesive and the proper cleat fastener. If you're looking for more expert advice come see us at Rustic Woods Flooring!
